Could I do it? Could I actually build a real airplane? Imagine how many people have asked this question. For many who did, all kinds of thoughts must have raced through their minds. Well over ten thousand experimental airplanes, (homebuilts), have been built and are flown by individuals from all walks of life. When one asks, “Could I do it?” The answer of course is, “Do you know what end of a hammer to pick up?” If the reply is yes, you can do it. Sounds silly? Not really. Read on and see what’s involved and what it takes. This is not a book on how to do it. Rather it’s a retelling of experiences and a mentioning of considerations and things to know that are part of the whole process. And finally, condition inspections, routine maintenance, and ongoing practices and experiences. This will not be instructions on how to build, fly, and maintain an airplane. Rather it is a collections of ideas, experiences, and considerations associated with choices, techniques, and practices for anyone considering this activity.

For the authors, there was never a long considered goal of building an airplane and there was no eureka moment. The idea came from a chance happening, but once the seed was planted, it grew straight and strong. There are occasionally adventures in life that turn out better than expected. This was one of them.
